Prevention Officer at the MENTOR Initiative

The MENTOR Initiative is a UK registered charitable, not-for-profit, non-governmental organization working globally to relieve human suffering from tropical diseases. With support from BHA-PUI, The MENTOR Initiative is implementing Emergency Control of Malaria amongst high malaria areas in Borno state. The MENTOR Initiative works in close partnership with the MoH in Nigeria to build technical capacity and effective planning and responses to malaria and other VBDs.

We are recruiting to fill the position below:

Job Title: Prevention Officer

Location: Maiduguri /Jere, Borno (With a possibility of working in other LGAs)
Reporting to: Senior Prevention Officer

Overall Job Purpose

  • To assist the NGO functioning in all prevention and VBD control Activities.

Key Tasks and Responsibilities

  • To manage rapid assessment visits to the sites selected for the IRS/VBD Campaigns, and manage other planning activities.
  • To conduct base line survey and end line survey in all the designated areas and compare the impact of both survey conducted.
  • Support the Senior Prevention Officer to identify suitable casual workers for IRS campaign according to MENTOR Initiative selection criteria in coordination with MoH/local authorities.
  • Identify training venues in close coordination with LGA focal persons/community leaders.
  • To train teams on and conduct population sampling and surveys as required.
  • To maintain records of all IRS equipment and insecticide in the MENTOR office and prepositioning at target sites.
  • Support the Senior Prevention Officer in sensitization meetings with the key stakeholder before starting of each campaign.
  • Daily coordination meeting with IRS team after each day of IRS activity.
  • To keep relevant ministries and stakeholders informed about the IRS Campaign and other activities and ensure that relevant documents are signed by The MENTOR Initiative and Community Focal Persons.
  • To monitor IRS, IEC/BCC Campaigns and entomological activities using MENTOR M&E check-list and data tools and compiling results.
  • To organize, assist, and facilitate 3-4 days trainings of IRS workers, and to ensure that the spray teams are able to conduct quality spray campaigns according to the WHO recommended procedures.
  • In coordination with the logistician, to ensure that all IRS and entomological equipment and materials are maintained and stored under good conditions.
  • To carry out entomological activities on regular basis or as assigned by line manger.
  • To help in the development of standard IEC materials and also to organize and facilitate trainings for community Mobilizers on proper IEC/BCC.
  • To provide timely prevention monthly work-plan that shall be evaluated with the corresponding activities at the end of the relevant month.
  • To cross-check and compile daily data from IRS/VBD Campaigns, submit it to Senior Prevention Officer on timely basis.
  • Regular cross check of all the databases with hard data before sharing with the Senior Prevention Officer/Prevention Coordinator.
  • Any other related tasks assigned by the line manager or Prevention Coordinator.

Expected Key Results
Provide support to the Senior Prevention Officer for the achievement of the following results:

  • Training and capacity-building of Indoor Residual Spray (IRS) and Survey teams to implement impactful and successful VBD Campaigns.
  • To provide timely and regular updates on progress of IRS Campaigns, IEC, entomological and any other related activities in all the target areas in Borno state.
  • Proper documentation of various project activities including timely reporting and dissemination.
  • Maintaining fruitful coordination between The MENTOR Initiative and important stakeholders in the project areas.


  • Bachelor’s Degree in Biological Sciences / Public Health or Environmental Sciences.


  • 2 to 3 years of Previous NGO and/or work experience related to health and or logistic at community level.
  • Able to work as part of an established team with excellent communication skills, team builder, flexible, adaptable.
  • Good computer skills.
  • Conduct all activities in honest and trustworthy manner in the best interest of The MENTOR Initiative and the target community.
